Celebrating Mothers: Faith, Laughter, Love, and the Legacy They Leave Behind

Mother’s Day is one of those beautiful times of year when we pause to honor the women who shaped our lives with sacrifice, strength, prayer, and unconditional love. Whether through sleepless nights, packed lunches, endless encouragement, or whispered prayers over their children, mothers leave fingerprints on every generation.
This month, shares a heartfelt and humorous reflection on motherhood, faith, and the everyday moments that become lifelong memories. Known for blending comedy, encouragement, and inspiration, Gordon has spent decades bringing laughter and hope to churches, conferences, pregnancy centers, fundraisers, and family events across the country.
If you’ve ever laughed through chaos, cried while praying for your family, or realized moms truly are superheroes without capes — this one is for you.

Something Special for May!

From Gordon’s Funny Files…

Did Paul Revere’s Mom say—
"I don’t care what the British are doing — you are not to stay out past midnight!"
Did Mona Lisa’s Mother say—
"After all the money we spent on braces, why won’t you smile for the artist?"
Did Napoleon's Mama say—
"Stop stalling, get your report card out of your jacket, and let me see it NOW!"
Did Albert Einstein’s Mom ever say—
"With all your great learning, did you ever learn to use a comb… look at your senior picture, your hair is a mess!"
Did Thomas Edison’s mother say—
"Yes, Thomas, I am proud of you for inventing the light bulb, now turn it off and go to bed so we can all get some sleep!"

A Mother’s Love Leaves a Legacy

I have preached many Mother’s Day sermons. Some moms were heroes, some carried heartaches. Like the first mother in the Bible — Eve — who lost a child, as did the mother of Jesus.
There are mothers who fought for their children, and mothers who taught their children. There is something about the LORD being compared to a momma bear robbed of her cubs worth pondering.
Mothers who wanted the best for their children.
For brevity’s sake — I offer a SALUTE, a LITERARY SHOUT OUT, or a Toast in Text if you will.

To All the Mothers…

To all the mothers:
  • Who sat up all night with a sick child in their arms,
  • Who had barf or blood stains on their blouse, and yukky stuff in their hair after comforting a child in crisis,
  • Who ran carpools, made cookies or snacks for schools or teams,
  • Who have art collections on their refrigerators worth more than any museum,
  • Who read the same book “just one more time” as a child went off to sleep,
  • Who ate less so their children could have more,
  • Who sat for hours on frozen bleachers at some game, just so they could nod when their child yelled, “DID YOU SEE THAT?”
  • Who have fingers that braided hair, sewn clothes, stirred pots, and are folded in prayer…

We honor you today!

THANK YOU.
May you know you are loved and your labor is not in vain!

A Final Word of Encouragement

Motherhood is rarely glamorous. Most of the time, it looks like sacrifice no one sees, prayers no one hears, and love poured out in ordinary moments.
Gordon Douglas
But those moments matter.
To every mother, grandmother, foster mom, adoptive mom, spiritual mother, and woman who has loved and nurtured others well — thank you.
Your kindness matters.
Your prayers matter.
Your love matters.
And as Gordon would say…

“Until next time, may each day be filled with Love and Laughter!”
